José Alfredo F. Costa received D.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (FEEC/Unicamp, December, 1999). He received B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (July, 1992), M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidade de São Paulo – EESC São Carlos (January, 1996, with Honors and Distinction). He is with Federal University (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil), Department of Electrical Engineering, as Associate Professor. He was Dept. Head from 2004 to 2006. He was a post-doc researcher @ Universidade Estadual de Campinas (FEEC/Unicamp) (2001) and an academic visitor (post-doc researcher) at SISP – Sensing, Imaging & Signal Processing Group, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester, UK (2009/2010). His research interest includes neural networks and self-organizing systems, data visualization and clustering, signal and image processing, pattern recognition and intelligent classification, data mining and business intelligence. He is currently the president of SBIC – Brazilian Computational Intelligence Society (former Brazilian Neural Networks Society – SBRN). He had been working in many national and international conferences and also had been reviewer of periodicals and Ad Hoc consulter of research entities. He had also worked as appraiser for institutions and graduate courses in Brazil (INEP) and coordinates the Adaptive Systems Lab (UFRN).
