FERNANDO BUARQUE DE LIMA NETO has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence by University of London – England (2002), Diploma of Imperial College in Artificial Neural Networks (2002), a Masters Degree in Computing by Federal University of Pernambuco (1998) and a Bachelor degree in Computer Science by Catholic University of Pernambuco – UNICAP (1991). Fernando Buarque has studied Business Administration, read Philosophy of Science and Neuroscience at Imperial College London. He can speak Portuguese, English, Spanish, and basic French and Italian. Currently, Fernando Buarque is (i) Associate Professor of University of Pernambuco (UPE), (ii) Coordinator of Masters Programme in Computer Engineering of School of Engineering (POLI) of UPE, (iii) Associate Researcher in the Systems Engineering postgraduate Programme and (iv) Director of Technology of Telemedicine center of UPE. Fernando Buarque is an accredited researcher by CNPq (The Brazilian Research Council), has published around 100 papers on Artificial and Computational Intelligence, has supervised about 20 successful postgraduate theses/dissertations and over 35 graduation projects. Currently is supervising 12 postgraduate students, is reviewer of 8 international journals, has acted as PC member of a few dozens of International conferences, and has coordinated over 10 funded major research Projects aiming at applications in Agriculture, Medicine and Industry. Prof. Buarque is head of Computational Intelligence research group of UPE – CIRG, composed by 6 Professors and 35 students. His recent theoretical works focused on Evolutionary and Social computation, modeling of Complex Systems, developing Hybrid and Decision Support Systems. Fernando Buarque has active collaborations with several universities outside of Brazil such as Johannesburg (South Africa), Münster (Germany), Heriot-Watt (Scotland) and Florida Institute of Technology (United States). In the last year he was invited to deliver five talks in Europe, China and United States of America. He is a member of several scientific societies both in Brazil and abroad, namely, Brazilian Computer Society, Computational Intelligence Brazilian Society, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) and IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society (SMC). In 2007, Prof. Fernando Buarque was elevated to Senior Member grade of IEEE (United States of America) and in 2011 was appointed visiting Professor to University of Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2012 visited INRIA Paris-Rocquencourt as ‘Professeur invité’, France; and was appointed ‘Graduate Faculty’ of FIT (Florida Institute of Technology) – USA. In 2013, he will be chairing the BRICS & Brazilian Congress on Computational Intelligence.
